On Friday, November 15th 2013, from 9am - 6pm, TEDxCharlottesville will host its first TEDx event, “The Difference That Makes a Difference” at The Paramount Theater with a special satellite stream at The Jefferson Theater. “The Difference That Makes a Difference” is the first ever-standard TEDx event in Charlottesville, Virginia.  Following the Speaker conference, there will be a reception and live music at the Jefferson Theater starting at 7:00pm. Complimentary food and drink will be provided throughout the day and evening.

TEDxCharlottesville originally launched in December 2012 to create a space for “Ideas Worth Spreading.” TEDxCharlottesville aims to contribute to strengthening the cultural atmosphere of our city by creating a united environment amongst the speakers, volunteer staff members, and participants.

ALMA Telescope / Tony Beasley – "ALMA" (Atacamba Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array) is an international project in Chile but orchestrated by NRAO here at UVa. ALMA is the highest telescope array on Earth capturing never-before seen details about the very first stars and galaxies in the Universe.

Hawa Ahmed – Student

Dawn Averitt – Founder of The Well Project, a leader in the fight against HIV and AIDS

Tony Beasley – Director of “ALMA” (Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array)

Ralph Cohen – Co-Founder of American Shakespeare Center

Dr. Jeffrey Elias, M.D. – Focused Ultrasound Surgery, using focused ultrasound for the treatment of movement disorders such as Essential Tremor and Parkinson’s disease.

R. Edward Freeman - University Professor and Olsson Professor of Business Administration at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business, prolific educator, consultant and speaker, best known for his work on the topics of Stakeholder Management and Business Ethics.

Dr. Joel Fuhrman - American board-certified family physician who specializes in nutrition-based treatments for obesity and chronic disease.

Dr. Leslie Gordon, M.D. – Progeria Researcher, discovered the gene defect in Progeria.

John Hunter – World Peace Teacher, musician, teacher, filmmaker and game designer, John Hunter has dedicated his life to helping children realize their full potential.

John Kluge, Jr. – Co-Founder, Toilet Hackers

Matt Mason – BitTorrent, Author of The Pirate’s Dilemma

Vusi Mahlesala – Musician

Darius Nabors/strong> – Teacher

Edwin Roa – Choreographer, Founder of Zabor Dance, Teaching confidence, social acceptance, and lessons of life through the art of dance.

Zoë Romano – Runner, Zoë Goes Running, Zoë is attempting to be the first person to run the Tour de France (and do it in 64 days).

Denise Stewart – Playwright, Actor

Laura Thomas – Director of the Charlottesville High School Orchestra

Chandler Van Voorhis - Co-Founder and Managing Partner of GreenTrees, which plants, grows, and sells permanent forests.
